The head of the federal education department told a small Charleston group Friday that closing the achievement gap is arguably the biggest issue today in education, and very few places are doing enough to address that problem.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan fielded questions for a little more than a half-hour from more than 60 students, community leaders, school officials and parents gathered in North Charleston. It was Duncan’s first trip to South Carolina.
